We remain linked to the power struggles of the past. Our sense of liberation emerges from that from which we strive to liberate ourselves. If we want to get free of something, it’s because it has already shaped us. Liberation is a function of that power; liberation is always about getting free of something that has power over us and seizing power for ourselves. Liberation is work that can’t end. If we ever totally freed ourselves from outside influences, we’d no longer comprehend what it would mean to liberate ourselves from those influences.
